Digital tools for autism social skills are becoming an increasingly interesting area of research. From interactive apps and serious games to virtual reality (VR), researchers are exploring technology as a way to help autistic children practise specific social and communication skills.

But parents may reasonably wonder: Can technology really help a child develop social skills, or is it simply another form of screen time?

Recent research offers a cautiously positive answer. Digital interventions may help some autistic children practise skills such as emotion recognition, conversation, eye gaze, joint attention, and social communication. However, researchers also emphasise that technology is not a replacement for real-world relationships or individualised support.

The most useful question may therefore not be, “Is technology good for autism?” but rather, “Can this particular digital tool help my child practise a specific skill in a meaningful way?”

Researchers are exploring different digital tools for autism social skills,including:

  • Virtual reality (VR)
  • Mobile and tablet applications
  • Serious games
  • Video modeling
  • Augmented reality
  • Interactive social scenarios
  • Computer-based learning programs

These tools may target different skills. For example, one program might help a child identify facial expressions, while another might provide opportunities to practise starting a conversation.

This distinction matters because social skills are not a single ability. Social communication can involve initiating and maintaining conversations, recognising emotions, interpreting social cues, taking turns, responding to others, and participating in shared activities.

Therefore, a digital intervention designed to improve emotion recognition should not automatically be expected to improve every aspect of social interaction.

Digital interventions show promise, but they are not automatically better.

A 2024 systematic review and meta-analysis by Tianqi Wang and colleagues examined 33 randomised clinical trials involving 1,285 participants with autism.

Overall, the researchers found greater improvements in autism-related outcomes or IQ among participants receiving digital health interventions compared with control conditions. However, an important finding appeared when digital interventions were compared specifically with active interventions: the advantage was no longer statistically significant.

This suggests that digital tools may be helpful, but it would be too strong to conclude that they are better than established non-digital interventions.

In other words, technology may be another useful way to deliver or practise learning, rather than a replacement for effective support (Wang et al., 2024).

Serious games may help children practise specific social skills.

Games can make repetitive practice more engaging, which is one reason researchers are studying “serious games”, games designed not only for entertainment but also for educational or therapeutic purposes.

In 2024, Tânia Carneiro and colleagues conducted a systematic review of serious games for developing social skills in autistic children and adolescents. Nine studies met their inclusion criteria.

The reviewed interventions showed positive findings in areas including:

  • emotion recognition
  • emotional regulation
  • eye gaze
  • joint attention
  • behavioral skills

However, the researchers also pointed out that the evidence base remains limited and that more rigorous studies are needed before strong conclusions can be drawn (Carneiro et al., 2024).

A separate 2024 systematic review by Tahere Talebi Azadboni and colleagues examined 26 studies involving 25 serious games. The researchers reported significant improvement in at least one measured outcome in many of the studies.

These findings are encouraging, but they should not be interpreted as evidence that every autism-related game will produce meaningful changes in everyday social interaction.

Virtual reality is particularly interesting because it can create controlled and repeatable social situations.

A child might practise responding to a simulated conversation, identifying social cues, or navigating a particular social situation without immediately having to manage all the unpredictability of a real-world interaction.

A 2024 meta-analysis by Palka Mittal and colleagues examined randomised controlled trials of immersive VR training involving children and adolescents with autism. The researchers found promising effects across cognitive, social, and emotional skills.

The findings suggest that immersive VR may provide a useful environment for practising certain skills, although the number of studies included was relatively small (Mittal et al., 2024).

In 2025, Xipeng Yang and colleagues conducted a systematic review of 14 studies examining VR interventions for social skills in autistic children and adolescents.

Overall, the review found positive effects on social skills. The researchers also reported that immersive VR may be particularly useful for practising more complex skills, while non-immersive approaches may offer advantages such as lower cost and greater flexibility.

But there is an important caution.

The quality of the 14 studies varied: six were considered high quality, four moderate quality, and four low quality. The researchers also identified possible adverse effects associated with VR, including dizziness, eye fatigue, and sensory overload (Yang et al., 2025).

For a child who finds immersive environments overwhelming, a highly sophisticated VR system may not necessarily be the best choice.

A 2026 systematic literature review by Xinru Jiang and Shana R. Cohen examined 31 peer-reviewed studies on digital technologies and social communication among autistic children and adolescents.

VR was the most frequently studied technology, appearing in 13 studies. Researchers examined skills such as conversation initiation, conversation maintenance, emotion recognition, social understanding, and nonverbal communication.

One of the review’s most important conclusions was that no single digital tool can address every area of social communication.

The authors emphasized the need to tailor digital interventions to the individual child because autistic children and adolescents can respond very differently to technology.

The review also highlighted practical concerns such as the cost of some technologies, which may limit access for families with fewer resources (Jiang & Cohen, 2026).

This is an important message for parents: there may not be one “best” autism app or technology.

The right tool depends on what the child actually needs.

This is perhaps the most important question.

Imagine a child learns to identify a happy or sad facial expression in a digital game. That is useful practice, but real social interaction is much more complicated.

In everyday life, children also have to respond to:

  • tone of voice
  • body language
  • unexpected changes
  • another person’s interests
  • turn-taking
  • misunderstandings
  • different social environments

A child may complete a digital exercise but still need support using the same skill with a sibling, classmate, teacher, or friend.

Therefore, digital practice is most meaningful when it is connected to real-world opportunities to use the skill.

For example:

Digital activity: Practise identifying emotions.

With an adult: Talk about examples from everyday life.

Real-world practice: Notice and discuss emotions during play or conversation.

The goal is not simply to become better at completing the digital activity. The goal is to help the child use useful skills in situations that matter to them.

Before introducing a digital intervention, parents can ask a few simple questions.

1. What specific skill does it target?

Look for a clearly defined goal rather than broad claims such as “improves social skills.”

2. Is there research behind it?

Look for peer-reviewed research rather than relying only on testimonials, advertisements, or app-store ratings.

3. Is it appropriate for my child?

Consider age, communication abilities, interests, attention, learning style, and sensory preferences.

4. Does my child enjoy using it?

Engagement matters. A theoretically useful intervention is unlikely to help if the child finds it frustrating or overwhelming.

5. Can the skill be practised outside the device?

Ask yourself: “Where will my child use this skill in everyday life?”

6. Does technology complement existing support?

Digital tools can be incorporated into broader educational, developmental, or therapeutic approaches when appropriate. They should not be viewed as a substitute for meaningful human connection.

So, can digital tools help autistic children build social skills?

Research suggests that they can support certain social-communication skills for some children, but they are not a universal solution.

Recent studies of digital interventions, serious games, and virtual reality have reported promising results in areas such as emotion recognition, conversation, eye gaze, joint attention, and social communication. At the same time, researchers continue to highlight limitations in study quality, small samples, individual differences, long-term outcomes, and the transfer of skills into everyday life.

For parents, the goal should not be simply to give a child more technology.

Instead, think of technology as one possible learning tool, one that can provide structured, repeatable opportunities to practise a skill, ideally followed by opportunities to use that skill with real people.

Technology can create the practice space.

Human connection is where social skills ultimately come alive.
